چکیده
The Chronopolis Digital Preservation Initiative, one of the Library of Congress’ latest efforts to collect and preserve at-risk digital information, has completed its first year of service as a multimember partnership to meet the archival needs of a wide range of domains. Chronopolis is a digital preservation data grid framework developed by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego, the UC San Diego Libraries (UCSDL), and their partners at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Colorado and the University of Maryland's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). Chronopolis addresses a critical problem by providing a comprehensive model for the cyberinfrastructure of collection management, in which preserved intellectual capital is easily accessible, and research results, education material, and new knowledge can be incorporated smoothly over the long term. Integrating digital library, data grid, and persistent archive technologies, Chronopolis has created trusted environments that span academic institutions and research projects, with the goal of long-term digital preservation. A key goal of the Chronopolis project is to provide cross-domain collection sharing for long-term preservation. Using existing high-speed educational and research networks and mass-scale storage infrastructure investments, the partnership is leveraging the data storage capabilities at SDSC, NCAR, and UMIACS to provide a preservation data grid that emphasizes heterogeneous and highly redundant data storage systems. In this paper we will explore the major themes within Chronopolis, including: a) The philosophy and theory behind a nationally federated data grid for preservation. b) The core tools and technologies used in Chronopolis. c) The metadata schema that is being developed within Chronopolis for all of the data elements. d) Lessons learned from the first year of the project. e) Next steps in digital preservation using Chronopolis: how we plan to strengthen and broaden our network with enhanced services and new customers. 1 This paper is based on the paper given by the authors at the 5th International Digital Curation Conference, December 2009; received November 2009, published June 2010. The International Journal of Digital Curation is an international journal committed to scholarly excellence and dedicated to the advancement of digital curation across a wide range of sectors. ISSN: 1746-8256 The IJDC is published by UKOLN at the University of Bath and is a publication of the Digital Curation Centre. 120 Chronopolis Digital Preservation Network

Developing Preservation Metadata for Use in Grid-Based Preservation Systems
Establishing metadata requirements is a key challenge for any attempt to implement a digital preservation repository. The repository’s capacity to provide costeffective, trustworthy services largely derives from the metadata it uses. This paper describes the metadata posited to support services the Chronopolis preservation system will offer at the conclusion of its first year of development. Ch...

This paper will examine ongoing work between two major preservation systems, the Chronopolis Digital Preservation Program, [6] and the MetaArchive Cooperative. [13] In the past year, these two systems have begun work on bridging their technical underpinnings to create a more robust, reliable, longlived preservation community for their users. The main emphasis of this work is moving data between...

متن کاملChronicles in Preservation: Preserving Digital News and Newspapers
Since the mid-1990s, libraries and archives have been digitizing newspapers for preservation and access. The standards used for this work have evolved significantly during this time. Modern collections employ digitization techniques, metadata extraction and standards, and file formats that are very different compared to early collections. Increasingly, libraries and archives also include born-d...
